Social Selfie Suicide Syndrome

As a college student who wanted to be in touch with not-so-close friends or classmates I logged into Orkut. Orkut back then was a pioneer for the social networking movement in India. I was generally not very taken up by the idea of a page where people visit and write stuff about you. e.g.testimonials, notes, greetings etc ( I'd rather have my friends talk to me than post these things). That was the time when narcissism was raises its ugly head in a comparatively innocent Indian youth society. We were just getting used to the idea of posting good looking pictures of ourselves and getting approvals from strangers and friends alike. (If you did not have a good looking so-called pretty face you could compensate by posting images of actors and actresses).
That's what I did; well primarily because I had to visit a cyber cafe to visit my Orkut profile or any internet related job. So uploading your own picture means well a lot of extra effort and I was just too lazy for that!
So my first picture was that of Hilary Duff... My favourite Disney girrrrrrrrrrrrl!!... LIZZIE Mc GUIRE!!

And over time I graduated to an even more sexier picture of the same actress...

Over a period of time I was introduced to the world of Facebook by my soon-to-be celebrity cousin.
I really did like it. It had a lot of privacy, control over your home page and so on.
It gave me the courage to add my own pictures.
Narcissism raised its ugly head again.
I have since then gone from Facebook to personal messaging platform Whatsapp.

It has been quite a long time. Earlier you would find a handful few who would dare to access Facebook and Whatsapp on a daily basis. Now you find herds of people overdoing it.
The selfie syndrome has taken its toll over girls and guys alike.
Getting likes is the equivalent of people telling you that you look pretty in person.
If you cross 100 you are quite the hot and happening thang!!
If you manage above that then you are safely a hottie in the making...
Very soon we can well imagine nothing but selfie shots at a wedding!

Crazy faces!!

Or we will end up like the following lady who plunged to her death on her "dream vacation" in Spain:
